Two sew-through buttons of ocean pearl: a small hand-carved one set with a cut steel crescent moon and star, made about 1885; and a large hand-carved one of two-tone pearl made in the Philippines in the late 20th century. Cut steel refers to small bits of faceted steel that were hand-riveted into a brass button base, a process that was used in button and jewelry making from the late 18th to the late 19th centuries.
