This lovely button is made of Celluloid. Celluloid was discovered in 1869. It was the first modern plastic and was made with wood fiber (cellulose) and camphor. It was a popular material for buton construction from 1870-1930. This stamped brass button has a celluloid center complimented with glass pieces and enamel in the center. After World War II, production of all celluloid buttons came to an end because of safety concerns.
