Jet Glass

Product #: 01-09vault6
Collection: Vault Necklace

Few buttons are as emblematic of the Victorian era as are jet glass. When Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria went into mourning for the rest of her life. Consequently black or jet glass buttons were popular throughout her reign. Most of these buttons were made in cottage industries in Bohemia (today's Czech Republic). Gorgeous buttons such as this circa 1890 example were pressed by hand in iron molds, which had been cut in intricate lacey patterns by skilled mold makers. The buttons were then ground smooth and polished. All in all, 14 hand-done steps were required to create buttons such as these. This lovely piece will be hung from the watch chain necklace pictured above. Necklace measures 16-20 inches in length. A vault card will be enclosed containing your button description and authenticity.
